RE: Canadian Products, Sherwood's Forests Tree Farm retails and wholesales 80 locally grown species of trees and shrubs. While some of the original seeds and plugs may have found their way to Canada from Europe, and other countries, enough local effort and Canadian spirit goes into the growing of these plants to qualify for Canadian-made status!
RE: Environmental Practices, In addition to having a terrific attitude about what they do and how they do it, Sherwood's Forests Tree Farm, places the environment high on its list of priorities! Nursery containers are recycled for most of the production. Birds are fed year round to reduce the need for insecticides during growing season. Local critters, like ground squirrels, are tolerated and left to natural predators, like hawks, to keep in balance. Over 30 acres of pasture is devoted to feeding deer so that trees are not a primary source of nibbling. The irrigation system is completely flexible in design to accommodate ongoing changes/needs. A Farm Environmental Management Plan is in place. Shelterbelts of dogwood, sea buckthorn, lilac, chokecherry, green ash, poplar, pear, hawthorn, and crabapple have been planted to increase local wildlife diversity. By keeping much land in pasture, spring thaw runoff is clear water and minimizes washing away of soil!
