Dan Bruiger, Author/Publisher of Left Field Press on Hornby Island, BC writes this customer review about Left Field Press.
"Much has been gained by treating nature as inert, passive, and a
mere product of human definitions. Our technological civilization is
grounded on that premise—as well as on oil—but it is arguably
crumbling, in step with diminishing fossil fuels. A subtle reflection
of this attitude toward nature is the attitude of the western world
toward manufacturing, which is the literal imposing of idea upon
matter. Why are most of our goods now made in China, India, or other
“societies in transition”? First of all, of course, because of the
wage differential. But doesn’t this valuation of the bottom line, and
the corresponding willingness to accept shoddy goods, reflect
something deeper? Doesn’t it say that we’ve embraced mechanism so
thoroughly that “the economy” is regarded by all classes as an
automated machine for making money? But money is not wealth. Wherever
globalism has displaced the more natural process of locally creating
real wealth from materials, labor, and services, what is left is an
investment economy, which merely moves virtual credits from one basket
to another, with a liberal application of sticky fingers. This
independence from real creativity is illusory in the way that
independence from nature is illusory. It provides only a short-sighted
and temporary advantage, since the emerging nations will eventually
supercede us or exhaust the planet trying to. The unreality of
globalism, as a final theory of economics, reflects the unreality of
nature according to a science that believes itself on the verge of a
final Theory of Everything." [excerpted from the introduction to a
forthcoming book by Dan Bruiger, The Made and the Found, in
preparation.]
