Talia in Toronto, Ont. writes this customer review about Europe Bound-Hikers Haven.
I love to support the Canadian retail economy as much as I can,
especially when it comes to independently owned stores. As a former
Assistant Store Manager and Store Manager of two independently owned
and operated Canadian stores, this is very important for me. However,
I was extremely disappointed with my experience at Europe Bound.
The store manager has worse customer service skills than an
angst-filled, indifferent, minimum-wage, teenage employee.
I had purchased a bag at this store, by referral from a friend. I
took the bag on one trip and the strap broke. This particular bag is a
private label product, with "Europe Bound" embroidered right on it.
When I returned to Toronto, I went back to the store to discuss what
my options were in regards to the broken strap. The store manager's
lack of professionalism is astounding! How he's made it this far in
life and how he miraculously managed to acquire the title of "store
manager" is completely beyond me.
Basic customer service involves being able to hold a conversation.
The store manager at Europe Bound lacked this very basic service
skill. And not even a service skill, a life skill.
When I went back to the store to discuss my bag issue, the store
manager immediately became defensive and accusitory. He was unable to
let me finish a sentence, he just kept cutting me off and cutting me
up. He continually accused me of "staring" at him, which he said made
him feel uncomfortable. It's called eye-contact, buddy. He then
proceeded to demean and condescend me. All of this, by the way, was
taking place on the floor, in front of other customers who are
witnessing his immaturity and lack of managerial qualities.
With him becoming defensive about the bag ripping, it shows me that
he also acknowledges a lack of quality in the product. If the store
manager does not trust or support the quality of the store's own
private label products, how can I? And it didn't help that when I went
downstairs to look at potentially buying another bag, I found the
exact same bag that I had purchased on the sale floor with an even
worse broken aspect to--the fabric strap on my bag had ripped while
the plastic handle to roll the bag was broken on the other bag.
Fantastic.
What this pathetic excuse for a human being fails to realize, is that
he has destroyed the credibility of the Europe Bound brand AND store.
On top this, it never crossed his mind what kind of network I might
have. Not only has he lost one potentially loyal customer, word of
mouth (both electronic and verbal) will spread through my entire
contact list of friends and family.
