Doug in Toronto, Ont. writes this customer review about Hiawatha's Hideaway.
This was the worst cottage rental experience I have ever had. The
proprietors of Hiawatha's Hideaway advertised it on their website as
being on a clean lake, great for swimming, and in a phone
conversation, told us it was "perfect for children". The photos on
their website made it look pristine and inviting. However, the morning
after arriving and seeing it in daylight, we discovered that the water
in front of their beach on "Dog Lake" had a foul-smelling two-inch
thick algae cap over it right to the shoreline and at least 200 feet
out, because of (as they told us) agricultural run-off pollution from
nearby farms. Our young daughter cried when we arrived at the shore
and saw the stinking, filthy mess that the proprietors describe as
their "perfect for children" beach. There was no access to any clean
swimming water from the site - although the owners did say that if we
rented a boat from them at additional expense and went far enough out
into the lake, we might find a patch that wasn't clogged with algae.
Not a very inviting prospect. The water from the taps and showers ran
green too. We actually had to open the windows of the cottage to clear
the air after running the water, it stank so badly. When we complained
to the owners, they said they couldn't help it that the lake was so
polluted, that it was always this way in the summer. To make it very
clear, they had not advised us of this when we booked the cottage. We
told them it was unacceptable and that we were leaving that day and
wished to have a refund for the unused portion of our week. They
refused to reimburse us in any way. Very problematic, because they had
insisted on having the full $550 cash rental fee at the time of
booking. In fact, they actually deducted $20 from the damage deposit
so they could place an ad in the local paper to try to rent out the
cottage for the rest of the week, saying that if anyone else rented
it, they would refund our money. Nobody did. Surprise. We wrote to
them once more with our concerns, and again they refused to refund any
of our money, using the excuse that they have a short season and rely
on the cottage rentals to cover their personal living expenses. I'm
not sure how that justifies conveying falsehoods to tourists about the
condition of their site, but that's their logic. I took video footage
of the algae cap and was going to take them to small claims court.
However, after discovering that I would have to travel to Kingston for
the court appearance (a three-hour trip each way from where I live,
plus time off work) I decided the amount of money to be gained in a
court action wasn't worth the time involved. But I highly recommend
that you do not rent a cottage at Hiawatha's Hideaway. There are far
cleaner lakes, and far more pleasant proprietors to deal with in the
local area and Eastern Ontario in general.
