It's sad to see how many locals still think that people who stand in
rain snow and cold in lineups at the food bank are "losers" and have
"chosen" this lifestyle. Thank goodness the fine, decent,
non-judgemental souls who make the food bank work are there to balance
the scales!
Courtenay, like many other towns in British Columbia seems to be
caught up in a Campbell-style delusion of prosperity. I've lived in
the valley for almost 30 years and the gentrification happening in
recent years is undeniable. When you add a recession on top of that
(or as part of that), the growing lineups at the food bank are not
surprising.
The people, and there are many, who donate to and work at the food
bank deserve incredible credit for recognizing the need to address
increasing poverty and disparity between rich/poor in the Comox
Valley. And, they do so in a way which does not add to the humiliation the
beneficiaries of these services already live with daily. Thanks to
each and all of you for your most important work!
