Samantha in Edmonton, Alta. writes this customer review about Bikram Yoga Edmonton.
I've been very committed to practicing Bikram yoga for 5 years
(mostly in Edmonton at the 80th avenue location) and have to say I was
initially amazed by how much this type of yoga had a positive
influence on my overall body, so much so I couldn't stop raving about
it to many people close to me.
It's not only helped my circulatory system, nerve pain, flexibility,
muscle strength my body drink a lot more water -something I am much
grateful for but also helped me feel really good about myself on an
emotional level. More recently I've been concerned about the lack of
consistency with the teaching style of those who teach which has at
times negatively affected my psyche during and after class and I find
this concerning.
I've realized that however amazing this series of postures is, the
teachers can make or break the experience. Some will be very
encouraging and supportive and focus on guiding you through a practice
helping participants correct their posture and staying in the class no
matter how hot it gets while others dictate what you are to do in a
forceful manner and if you resist in any way will potentially single
you out and humiliate you in class.
I've recently experienced this on a few occasions and it's honestly
de-concentrated my practice and instead of leaving class with an
amazing feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction, I've left feeling
upset and angry. Definitely defying my purpose in going in the first
place.
I can only hope that some Bikram practitioners who have tendencies to
be forceful in class and as a result can make a student feel
uncomfortable and upset perhaps revisit the way they approach their
students and wait to have a discussion with them after class rather
than make it a case during class when the student has no voice and
cannot effectively explain themselves. If on the other hand being
forceful is a part of being a Bikram teacher than I hope this practice
advertises as such which would at least be less confusing for
students. Perhaps having more consistency amongst the way Bikram
teachers teach may also help towards the success of the students
experience.
What I have learnt from my experience is that if you would like to
try Bikram yoga but are the type of individual who doesn't agree with
a forceful approach in learning yoga I encourage you to talk to the
teacher before hand to ask questions about their teaching style in
order to potentially avoid a humiliating and upsetting experience.
